Should I buy this TV? Which Credit Card?
I’m a student, currently skint until when my Student Loan comes in next month (approx £1000).
I work in a leading supermarket, and they have a decent offer on – a 32in Sony Bravia LCD TV, HD-Ready, Integrated Freeview for £427 – after staff discount I’d pay just £385
Thing is, I’m skint until I either get paid or my student loan comes in; both are AFTER the TV offer ends.
I normally have decent credit, I’ve never had a credit card before and usually wait until I can afford something before it; obviously I’d be paying the TV off once I DID get paid.
Should I apply for a credit card to buy it (most have an introductory term of zero interest), and which one should I get?
The best one I can find so far for me is a Student Barclaycard (14.9% interest, the cheapest I can find so far). Anything better? Or should I just leave it?

I’d say wait until next month – but being at uni is a lot more surreal now, is it not?
If you intend to pay it back in full – buy it
Give it a miss, you could find a better deal searching the net, trust me on that, i guarantee it!
The price of electronics is always coming down. Wait till you can afford it then buy it or one like it probably for less. Don’t get into the trap of, "I’ve gotta have it now." That is a dangerous road to go down. Good luck!
14.9% is very good given the current market conditions, anything lower has very very stringent credit scoring conditions – and most students wouldn’t come close to qualifying. I would however say once you have paid the TV off – cut the card up. It’s very tempting to see it as free money.
I suggest you pay cash if you can or save it up has the intrests are high so for instance a TV digital costs £1,500 after 3 years the total would be £3,456 its not worth it pay cash its far better than a credit card.
here in US we don’t need to get a new tv till the end of the year. But first of all you should not be even planning to use your student loan for anything other than schooling. But since you are in school why would you need a tv anyway, won’t you be studying? And what if you have to live with someone or have a bunch of kids around, aren’t you afraid your expensive tv will get stolen? And, why have a tv to lug around everywhere anyway, it’s just more baggage. You seem to have a computer, why not use your computer for the tv information you wish to see? For now, even though it "may" be a good deal, I’d suggest that you leave it. Once you get all your education in and a career job you’ll be able to get things you want.
You don’t actually need a television. You certainly don’t need a brand new one like that.
The reason businesses have sales for set periods of time is so that people get pressured into buying stuff without thinking about the consequences. If you’re a student, and you’re currently ‘skint’ until your loan comes in, it doesn’t make sense to spend money you don’t have on something you don’t need and then pay it back with borrowed money (the loan).
I think the whole idea is ridiculous. Don’t buy the television. Don’t use a credit card. Don’t apply for multiple cards, either, because when you do, it goes on your credit history, regardless of whether the card is issued to you, and can really damage your chances of getting a loan down the track.
Leave this whole thing alone. Buy a secondhand television if you really want one, without a credit card. And start saving some of your earnings so that when you do see a ‘bargain’ like this, you can use your own money.
Best wishes
